Brunton Helios Stormproof Lighter Review

My Helios worked well for a few weeks, but then it quit when I really needed it, on a long backcountry trip. I sent it to Brunton for repair. It worked well again, but only for a few weeks. It was sent back a second time, then a third, then a fourth. Adding to the frustration, Brunton's technical support people are terrible about responding to emails requesting return authorization numbers.

When I bought my Helios, they had a lifetime warranty. Now I notice on Brunton's website that the warranty has been reduced to one year. It's easy to understand why: It's an unimpressive piece of gear backed by unimpressive service.

Brunton Fuel Bottles (Spring 2010) Review

Brunton Fuel Bottles
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The caps for these fuel bottles are the worst caps I have ever seen. After 2 fills, the threads from both caps were almost completely stripped. Both of the bottles I received came with the child-proof caps that are very, very flimsy. One of the caps had the child-proof portion completely break off, rendering the stripped cap doubly useless. Now I have two bottles that cannot be used at all.MSR caps will not fit apparently.Customer service is non-existent.I tried to contact Brunton by phone and email with no success. There is no place to buy replacement caps.It is cheaper to just buy MSR bottles and extra caps than to have completely useless fuel bottles after minimal use.DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM!!!

Camp Chef Solstice 2 Mantle Camp Lantern Review

Camp Chef Solstice 2 Mantle Camp Lantern
Average Reviews:

I purchased a couple of the 2 mantle lanterns in hopes for matchless lantern usage.Neither lit on their own out of the box or throughout the 2 week trip we took them on.Beyond that the material quality is quite poor. There is a neck between the base that attaches to the gas and the lanterns head which flexes way too much, to the point where I don't get the feeling it'll last that long. The use of wire mesh instead of glass around the mantles is good for durability (no glass to break) but makes it much more exposed to any wind at all being an issue.

Fuel Bottle, .6L Review

Fuel Bottle, .6L

Received this faster than normal even with my two day prime shipping. Received it next day from Oklahoma to Michigan. Not bad!The bottle is as pictured, with the standard all plastic cap. It is NOT childproof like some newer fuel bottles are. The cap is all plastic, unlike the 1L bottle I also bought from Mad Athlete fulfilled by Amazon. The 1L bottle was a standard cap but it had a nice cushioned rubber grip on it but the ring at the top was smaller.

This 0.6L Primus fuel bottle was Made in Spain. The 1L Primus that I also purchased from Mad Athlete fulfilled by Amazon was Made in China. The caps on these bottles are not exactly the same! The Chinese one(1L with rubber grip) has a smaller diameter and doesn't fit the Spain (0.6L with standard all plastic cap(two loop holes in it)). However, the cap from the Spain bottle(0.6L all plastic-no rubber) fits the 1L bottle fine.

I'll update more on this later this summer. I plan on contacting Primus/North American gear and also comparing to my buddies MSR bottles and caps to see which cap is the closest match.

any vendor on Amazon charging over US$50 for an item such as this is gouging the consumer - absolutely ridiculous - make your own adapter by buying a Brunton adapter and using an Optimus Crux, or alternatively, using an MSR Dragonfly in a Trangia 25 or 27 cookset.

Butane is of good quality.Shipping is expensive at almost twice the price of the item. It's one of those "sell the item cheap and make money on the shipping" deals. And there's no "universal tips" included, which I assumed were interchangeable tips for refilling different types of containers.

Update: The tips are embedded in the cap (inside).Made of plastic and looks rather breakable, but haven't used any yet.

    Primus Micron Ti Stove Review

    Primus Micron Ti Stove
    Average Reviews:

    Pros:
    1. ignitor, burner in a compact sturdy package
    2. almost clumsy-proof ignitor
    3. good value compare to all other compact stoves available on the market (maybe that's why it's sold out in local REIs)

No test in field yet. A few good reviews found in www.backpackgeartest.org (3 reviews on the Ti version which is essentially the same stove using lighter construction sans ignitor)

Flame pattern is a good compromise between blow-torch compact stoves and wide-spread Optimus Crux compact stove.

Questionable pot support stability in the old design (this one is new design) but base on Ti version reviews, this new pot support can be reasonably stable.

Sips fuel. This explains why the BTU is not as high as some other compact stoves. But this also fits light backpacking.

Been happy with my old Primus compact Alpine stove, but want to have the convenient ignitor. Once used Primus micron lantern, been convert to Primus sturdy ignitor design.

    Product Description:
The Ti in the Primus Micron Ti 2.5 Stove means titanium, and 2.5 is how many ounces of that precious metal Primus needs to make a stove. Two and a half ounces is light, folks ? less than a bag of Skittles ? but don't be deceived. The Micron Ti may be small but it packs an 8500 BTU whallop, and it's fully adjustable from a low simmer to a scorching high setting that will boil a liter of water in about four minutes. The arms unfold to form a surprisingly stable four-inch cooking surface. Not huge, but enough for most lightweight camping pot and pan sets, and let's face it: if you're considering this stove you're probably not toting a cast iron skillet into the woods. *Fuel canister not included.

Optimus Fuel Bottle with Child Safe Cap Review

Optimus Fuel Bottle with Child Safe Cap
    Average Reviews:

    (More customer reviews)
This is your high-quality, puke-green Optimus fuel bottle with a 'child safe' cap. Unfortunately, not only is the cap 'child safe,' it is also poorly manufactured, hard to use, and prone to cause fuel leakage.

The cap functions much like the insipid pill bottles currently in vogue at your local pharmacies: press down to remove. But with this cap you also have to press down to close, and unless you're extremely careful and use an excessive amount of force to tighten down the cap, you *will* have fuel leakage.

One indication that this cap is unsuitable is that its threads do not match the bottle threads. No matter what you do, the cap will screw in [...]-eyed. In fact, there are no threads on the cap, merely four series of four raised ridges - one of most bizarre methods of corking a bottle I've ever seen.

So, while the bottle is good quality (i ordered a .4L, a good size for my 123R) and has the ability to store a variety of fuels (even denatured alcohol), the cap is yet another example of the need for tort reform, but ironically may even spur a few lawsuits on its own if a hiker or two explode into balls of flame due to an errant spark hitting a gas-soaked backpack.

Fortunately, there are at least four solutions: return the product (which i didn't); use a cap from an older Optimus bottle; use a cap from a Primus bottle; or for me, use a UCO Fuel Faucet cap. Interestingly, i have another .4L, non-child-safe puke green Optimus bottle and the UCO Fuel Faucet threads don't match - but work fine with this bottle. Go figure. And welcome to the global economy.

    MasterGlow Microlite Stove Review

    MasterGlow Microlite Stove
    Average Reviews:

    (More customer reviews)
I bought this stove at a hardware store in town on sale for $24.89 along with a lantern made by the same company (look for that review after this one). I was tired of looking for a stove to throw in my backpack that didn't cost $100+. I went ahead and bought an extra canister of fuel (it uses the standard threaded butane mixture canister) so I could test it before I took it out into the bush. The first thing I noticed in the store was how small it was! When unfolded it's barely larger than my hand - but it can easily hold the one quart pot from my two-person mess kit. It set up in less than 5 seconds

The next test was the time test. It seems so many backpackers are concerned with boiling a gallon of water in 20 seconds or their stove isn't good enough; a reason so many of the more expensive brands sell so well. It took approximately 1 minute, 56 second to boil a full 1 quart of water in my stainless steel pot. This is much more than is required for the typical freeze-dried meal (most require only 2 cups of water). Given that I'm out hiking or snowmachining to enjoy nature, I can't imagine the problem in taking a few extra seconds to boil some water for my hot meal - especially since I usually only have a hot meal at the end of the day when I'm ready to bed down.

The stove comes with a lightweight PVC carrying case that will keep it safe. Obviously you can't put the stove in there while hot or it will melt (the instructions, not to mention common sense, tell you not to). There is some discoloration along the pot supports after the first use, but that's to be expected.

Overall I look forward to putting this thing to use on the trail. It's lightweight, easy to operate, sets up extremely quick and is at a price too easy to pass up! I've given this product a 5/5 stars! Brilliant work!

This is the comprehensive repair kit for your MSR Dragonfly stove and its fuel pump. You will find every o-ring and seal you can need for both pump and stove, even the sealing collar that fits the pump to the repair body.It even has two replacement jets for your stove (one for white gas, and similar, and one for heavier fuels).Included also are tools to disassemble your stove and pump, and even a spare flame spreader. All this comes in a small plastic box that clips shut and keeps things organized.

I always try to pack as minimalist as I can but this is something I always include.MSR makes great gear and I've had both the Whisperlite and Dragonfly stoves and they've been very reliable.Still, a failed o-ring or other problem with your stove or pump out in the wild can be a real bummer. This repair kit keeps you covered. It's about the size of a small eyeglass case and weighs a few ounces.I'd say keep this with your Dragonfly stove at all times except for the shortest of backpacking trips where a faulty stove wouldn't totally ruin things.

It also comes with a full set of instructions with exploded views of both stove and pump, as well as an o-ring sizing chart.Instructions are in English, Japanese, French, and German.

I'd always like it if MSR products came cheaper, and this kit is another example. It's pro-grade stuff, however, like most things they make. This kit is no exception and I recommend it.The kit will also seem like a steal if you ever need it dozens of miles from nowhere, when you're cold, tired, and hungry and when that little o-ring on the fuel inlet decides to snap.

It's even easier to transport, and quicker and easier to set up at a tailgate party, campsite or any other location where fun, food and friends get together. Like the original RoadTrip Grill, the LXE features authentic open flame grilling, two powerful burners that are fully adjustable, electronic ignition and uncommon cooking versatility thanks to mix-and-match cooking surface options. However, a cleverly designed new stand distinguishes the LXE model from its predecessor. The X-shaped chassis is wheeled for easy maneuvering in both the upright and collapsed-for-transport positions. It sets up quickly and provides excellent stability for cooking, thanks to the simplicity of the scissor-like leg and frame design. Two side tables integrated into the unit slide out for grilling and cooking duties, then retract under the unit in a moment's motion for travel and storage. Because the grill is affixed to the stand and the lid features a locking mechanism, the unit is secure and steady while towing it to and from a vehicle using a convenient pull handle. The Coleman Roadtrip Grill LXE is designed to be used completely assembled. If table top use is desired - simply hand remove the 4 plastic cap screws and start cooking! The Roadtrip Grill LXE is easy to assemble - Push on wheels and insert plastic handle and it is ready to use! New tool holders and stainless steel carry handles added for convenience. Optimus Svea Stove
      Average Reviews:

      (More customer reviews)
I bought this stove in about 1975 from REI.It has served me very well for hundreds of meals.REI serviced it about 15 years ago for fun, but it has never been any trouble. What's so cool about it is that it is simple.Simply designed and kind of simple to use, once you're used to it.But two short stories will highlight my reasons to go with something else.
My teenage daughter needed a stove.I taught her how to light it, without actually doing it, so as not to build up pressure (you create pressure by external heat). She put a small amount of white gas around the neck of the burner and tried to light it with a match. After 4 nervous attempts she got a match close enough to ignite the gas.She opened the valve and waited. As the heat of the applied gas heated the contents of the gas tank, a small stream of liquid gas began to come out and also catch fire.I told her to close the valve but now she was too afraid to touch the stove which was flaming up.I calmly closed the valve and waited till most of the rest of the stove had quit burning then opened the valve and had a great, normal flame develop.I told her, "see how easy it is?".She did not.And the more I thought about it the more I could see her burning down the forest. We instead bought her a simple propane Coleman single burner stove. This stove is not for kids...actually none really are, but especially not this one.
Second story. Two months ago my friend and I set out to cook our meals on a backpacking - fishing trip.He pulled out his new JetBoil and I pulled out my Svea (I call it "Turbo").He flipped some switch and had boiling water in about 2 minutes, and it was whisper quiet.I barely had mine lit and ready to go by then. After two days he had barely used any isobutane, I had used the white gas in my stove and 8 additional ounces I had brought."But", I thought, "I could fry with any pan with "Turbo" and he could only use his special pot (which looks like a cup) that came with his".But it didn't matter because we only had freeze dried stuff so I vowed I would eventually change over to the newer technology for backpacking trips.I think I'll still like "turbo" for frying bacon back at base camp though....And I wonder if the JetBoil will be going strong in 33 years.

      Average Reviews:

      (More customer reviews)
This is an excellent stove and is made specifically for backpacking.Like the majority of backpacking stoves it requires priming (preheating) to start due to the range of fuels this stove can use. These fuels include Coleman fuel, unleaded gas, kerosene, E15, jet fuel, and the inverted butane/propane canister (adapted included). It is also lightweight at 11oz excluding canister.

It is not a remarketed Fyrestorm Multi-Fuel stove which uses Reflex technology where there is is a valve system controlling fuel and air automatically based the heating of the generator.Again, the Denali and the Fyrestorm are totally different stoves.

There are other options and stoves. However, I don't think that the majority of backpackers are going to lug around a green heavy steel propane canister to light their stove. Most willuse a Coleman fuel or gasoline or some type of butane-propane canister for the sake of weight reduction.

I have used the Denali and the Fyrestorm and they both are excellent. Both held up well. They do light differently. The Denali does take a bit more finesse to light.I would encourage one to practice lighting their stoves before embarking on their trip..I would not hesitate in buying either one.Again, these are backpacking stoves and are made to be lightweight. One has to base their decision on weight, fuel type and availability, altitude, cold weather, and heat production.

The Coleman Denali Expedition Stove is a multi-fuel stove designed for changes in latitudes, longitudes and altitudes around the globe. The Denali Stove is designed to burn a variety of liquid fuels: Coleman liquid fuel, unleaded gasoline, jet fuel or kerosene - and it also can operate on standard butane/propane canisters. In the butane/propane canister mode, it provides uncommonly reliable and consistent performance in cold weather, at altitude and throughout the life of the canisters, due to its liquid-withdrawal technology for canister fuel, and impingement burner configuration for all fuels. The stove features quick-connect fuel connectors for attaching the stove to liquid fuel bottle or butane fuel cartridge stand, even with gloves on. Three uniquely shaped legs swing out to provide a wide, stable cooking platform. Serrated pot supports on the stainless-steel legs help stabilize large pots. I bought my Whisperlite in 1996 and have yet to have a problem with it. (I think I may have cleaned it once) Simmering is a bit of a trick but if you use it several times before taking it into the woods you should be able to cook any food you can take in a back pack. There are stories about these stoves going into "meltdown" during light up on cold days but it is always because the user either over primed the stove or was using a damaged fuel line. If you accidentally over prime do not add more fuel. Just let what you have burn off.

I have never had problems lighting the stove or keeping it going (although I did run out of fuel once). Light and VERY easy to use.

Funny thing, it is a bit loud but you never notice until you turn it off.

Great Stove, Very LightCouldn't Say enough good things about it.However, be warned, this stove, although it says in the title, does not come with an Autostart.I thought it did, because they say that it does, but I did not receive one. After calling the company that shipped the item (Backcountry), they wanted to charge me extra for it.Never had a problem with Backcountry until this time.
